Golf, Iraq Style
The Ops shop, like most everyone else, ran out of work to do a couple weeks ago. IMEF Marines were trickling in and taking over so SSgt Copenhagen put his uselessness to good use one day. I stopped by on my way to pick up mail and found him out behind the building, whacking golf balls toward a distant, makeshift structure. After each ball was airborne, I could hear squeals and howls as it fell back to Earth.
SSgt Copenhagen, pretending he knows how to swing a club.
Turns out that LCpl Dingleberry was the official Golf Ball Retriever and in order to protect himself from incoming golf balls, he constructed a scrap metal fort in the middle of SSgt Copenhagen's driving range. After each ball hit the ground, LCpl Dingleberry raced out, scooped it up, screamed, and then dove for cover behind his fort before the next one smacked him in the head. SSgt Copenhagen practiced his accuracy by aiming directly for the fort, every time.
LCpl Dingleberry, peering out from behind his fort.
They are the poster children for what happens when Marines get bored. This was only confirmed when I realized the red pole next to the fort was flying a duct tape flag. Apparently, no fort is complete without a flag.
Ahh, duct tape...
The road in front of their building is named for a Marine from their unit who died last time they were deployed to Iraq. I guess this was an extra sign they had leaning up on the Hescos out back.

Sand traps aren't going to be a problem from now on. I remember one unit actually layed out a full golf course in the desert.
I love that fort!
The poles in golf holes always have flags (for judging the wind, I guess).
Golf courses in the desert... reminds me of the articles I read every so often about golf courses in the snow up in Alaska. They use day-glo orange golf balls, though.
LOL Duct tape! Hubby made sure to put a roll in the first care package we sent to our daughter after basic. Love the post and your pictures!
Just wanted to say Hi.
I saw an article titled "Words, War & the Web" in the USA weekend paper from "The Daily News" (J.ville NC). Ring a bell?
Anyway.....I saw your article and pic along with a few more soldiers and just decided to visit your blog.
Thanks for your sacrifices to help make the world a better place.
Gonna check upperman next!!!!
Bye
